Putting Mercedes-Benz Customers in the Driver’s Seat for Innovative Connected Car Services

I’m thrilled to announce that Otonomo has partnered with Daimler AG on a new initiative that will give Mercedes-Benz connected car customers access to innovative new apps for their cars, with built-in safety, security, and privacy management. Mercedes-Benz customers will have the power to give verified apps permission to use connected car data to deliver services that will make driving easier, more fun, and more rewarding.

The initial set of services we expect to see will include usage-based insurance (pay as you drive), on-demand fueling, and smart electric vehicle charging. Mercedes-Benz customers will grant permission to the apps they choose through a convenient mobile app that provides at-a-glance visibility into what data is being shared and lets customers revoke permission at any time.

The solution, which has been live with Mercedes-Benz data since mid-December, represents one of the first OEM to implement the neutral server initiative, created by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) as a joint effort to make automotive data available to interested third-party service providers in a safe and secure manner, without requiring those third parties to each individually sign a contract with a vehicle manufacturer. This initiative received critical support from the EU, automotive OEMs and other key players in the automotive industry, including insurance companies and energy providers.

The neutral server initiative offers huge benefits to the entire automotive ecosystem:

  • It puts customers in the driver’s seat, with more choice of services, faster innovation, and control over how their personal data is used and by whom.
  • It simplifies life for third-party service providers of all sizes, with access to automotive datasets from which they can innovate and differentiate their services and no requirement to negotiate a contract directly with an OEM.
  • It helps automotive OEMs scale their ecosystems faster, creating new business models and value for their customers.

Daimler AG and Otonomo share a vision about delighting their customers while protecting their data. We couldn’t be more excited to see our vision coming to life.
